Yes, you read that right..!

Thinking why a tech blog starts with such a title?. (That is nice,  ‘thinking’ and raising questions to oneself is always better being idle 🙂 ) Let me tell you a scant story to clarify this.

In school, “Shree Ganeshaya Namaha” was the first ink on many of my friends notebooks, who were the class toppers. It made many of us (at least few of us?) to believe that they topped the class with the help of this magic ‘mantra’.  I began experimenting with this, but with no successful results. Then, I always wondered why it helps my friends, but not me!

Later, when the gray substance of the brain is still pruning, white substances started increasing,  the brain wiring’s in the process of getting stabilized and increased electrical impulses and responses within, reading materials upgraded from comics to newspapers, magazines & article (Ok, you guessed that correctly.  I am talking about moving from childhood to teenage). Also thought process has changed and started showing that I will be eligible for voting in general elections soon. Meanwhile, reading of books such as “Shreemad Bhagavadgeeta” helped me to realize that my friends didn’t use “Shree Ganeshaya Namaha” alone to top the class. In fact, it was their efforts combined with this  confidence booster Mantra. Well, I got the better answers then!

Idea of booster Mantra prevailed in mind for a long time. Whenever my team gets stuck in an issue, at least one member of the team would ask the same question  ‘had you been to temple before starting this project?’. It takes me back to my school days and brings a sudden grin on my face.

Now we have the answer why to start with this title. Yes, again, you guessed it right before I explain. So, you simplified my job of explaining in further.  So, this mantra is point zero to begin with (Without a zero, decimal system doesn’t exit. Let me start with this point. Well, there are theses to prove it wrong. But none of those are neither practical nor easy to use) .

This blog will be the collection of articles based on our day to day work experience, experiments and learning. We would like to cover mostly what we do, what we know and what we would like to.  Hope someone might find this blog interesting and useful.

Bluetooth 5, hype vs reality

Recently, when I was speaking with people from IoT backgrounds in a tech Meetup, few questions were raised on the evolution of Bluetooth technology. We had an interesting discussion prolonged for an hour. Basic question raised was the Bluetooth hype vs reality. If you are following the art technology closely for last few years, there were lots of buzz around the topic related to technology, market, industrial evolution, etc. But, interestingly result were not satisfactory compared to the initial hype. Its market was definitely looking for a booster.

In December 2016, Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) announced core specification version 5.0 moving from the earlier 4.2 version. Now the Bluetooth 5.0 is available for use for the device manufacturers. Do that changes the equation? How moving to 5.0 spec helps? Well, there are different opinions, but definitely lots of positive and hence that looks promising:)

Bluetooth specification 5.0 defines device operating range 4 times greater than legacy 4. x specifications. This directly helps to increase the number of use cases. Specifically, increased range of BLE helps to replace WiFi for long range communication with low data transfer requirements such as home automation. It effectively reduces the infrastructure cost along with the improved battery life. This makes BLE a default choice of home automation, whole building coverage and outdoor use cases.

The effective data rate is doubled compared to legacy 4. x standard. This is an optional feature that can be selected based on the product requirements. The default rate is 1 mega symbols per second, where each symbol represents one bit (i.e. basic data rate supported is 1Mbps). Optionally 1Msym/s may support coded PHY. For error correction schemes with S=2 (500Kbps), S=8 (125Kbps) etc. Only encoded PHY supports 2Mbps. Thus uncoded PHY effectively reduces the time required to transfer the data by 50% and hence reduces the power consumption by half.

Another new feature introduced is slot availability mask. You never know, how many WiFi devices, medical devices, BLE enabled device, microwave devices and LTE devices operating near you. Since all of these devices use same ISM band @2.4GHz, it is quite possible that your BLE device communication face the interference issue. New 5.0 specification address this problem by introducing slot availability mask (SAM).

Add to these features, Bluetooth 5 is 8 times faster than legacy 4. x specifications and it enables connecting to two LE devices simultaneously. All these improvements in Bluetooth 5 specifications definitely make the Bluetooth default choice for smart home and smart city projects.

There are lots of researches and experiments going on in IoT with different wireless technologies. By 2021 Bluetooth SIG expects 48 Billion devices powered by this technology!. At the time of drafting this article, Philips lighting has announced the tie-up with Vodafone for the smart city project using IoT. While IoT started dominating the market, Bluetooth low energy is expected to be game changer.
